How to Choose and Use a Moustache Wax
The main ingredient in moustache wax is beeswax. Stiffer moustache waxes contain more beeswax.
How to Use Moustache Wax
Firstly scrape some wax out of the tin with the back of your thumbnail. Beeswax has a naturally firm consistency. Before you can use the wax, you’ll have to gently warm it. There are two main methods to do this. One way is to soften the wax between your fingertips. The second method is to use some form of heat on the wax, such as a hairdryer. Whichever method you choose, apply the softened wax to your moustache with your fingertips. Rub it into the hairs, starting at the centre and moving from one side to the other, and then quickly style the moustache with a comb and your fingers. If you find that the wax has stiffened too quickly before you have completed the styling, you can gently warm the entire moustache with a hairdryer whilst combing into shape.
Note: Moustache wax won’t stick to wet or damp hairs. It is also not as effective if it is applied to a recently oiled moustache.
Styling a ‘Handle-Bar’ Moustache
A ‘Handle-bar’ moustache is probably the most difficult moustache to shape. After waxing the moustache as directed above, pull each of the ends of the moustache outwards. Roll and twist each end with your fingers; this will narrow the ends of the moustache. Carefully create an upward shape using your index finger and thumb. You can choose whether to keep the ends tight or make them a little fuller by untwisting slightly. You may want to apply a little more heat at this stage to get the shape correct, then leave to cool. How long the handle-bar moustache stays in shape depends on the strength of the wax you use.
Tip for use on that special occasion when you want the moustache to stay in shape for a long period of time: Once you are happy with the shape of your waxed moustache, slip a piece of paper behind the curl, spray it with hairspray and then remove the paper. Your perfectly styled moustache is now guaranteed not to flop over time or blow out of shape with the wind.
